Why the Nashville Black Covenant Coalition

A group of concerned local citizens have come together form the Nashville Black Covenant Coalition with the aim of taking advantage of the energy engendered by the national dialogue surrounding the book entitled The Covenant With Black America. To this end a citywide meeting was organized and took place on Saturday October 21, 2006 at Pearl Cohn High School. Since then the coalition has worked to further the agenda that the meeting brought forward.

The publication of The Covenant With Black America, with is forward by Tavis Smiley, has received nationwide attention and prominence; and appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. It consists of 10 chapters, each written by an expert in fields such as healthcare, education, justice, etc.

At least 15 cities across the country, including Memphis, TN, have held town hall meetings to explore ways to address the serious problems facing the black population in America today. Nashville, with its richly endowed African-American community, was overdue for such a gathering.

We believe The Covenant can provide a springboard for concerted action which can produce the kind of positive change needed to solve the serious problems of educational underachievement, health disparities, crime and violence, unresponsive political representation, and environmental injustice; to name a few. We believe that if we can build the will, we can make a way. We believe there are a significant number of members of our community who strongly feel the need to right our plight but don’t know where to go or how to do it. We believe that apathy is our main enemy and that information can breed inspiration.

We are asking the members of our community to engage with us in a dialogue, the development of a plan to address our issues and to assist in executing said plans for our uplift. If you believe in the spirit of what we endeavor to do, we ask for your support, for your thoughts and for your voice. We seek to affect a concerted effort resulting in the improvement of our collective lot.

If you feel you can contribute to the success of this movement, please join with us. It’s up to every one of us to make this happen!
